German Program

German Program

The German program in the IU School of Liberal Arts opens the door to one of Europe’s most influential cultures and economies. By studying German, you broaden your worldview and gain access to a region central to global business, technology, engineering, communication, education, and the arts.

Language is at the heart of learning and connection and immerses you in literature, film, art, music, history, politics, performance, and new media. In our active, student-centered classes, you build the skills to speak, read, and write in German while strengthening your critical and creative thinking, communication abilities, digital literacy, and intercultural competence.

Minor in German

German is spoken by more than one hundred million people across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein, and it plays a central role in the European Union. It’s also a powerhouse language in philosophy, history, music, science, engineering, and technology—fields where German ideas and innovations have shaped global progress.

Minoring in German gives you immediate access to this vibrant cultural and intellectual landscape. Your coursework broadens your horizons while preparing you for careers in international business communication, translation, travel and hospitality, education, and technology exchange. You gain the practical skills to read, write, and understand spoken German, along with the conversational confidence needed to connect across cultures.

A German minor pairs seamlessly with majors in the natural and social sciences, business, engineering and technology, the arts, other languages, and interdisciplinary fields. Whether you’re aiming for a global career or want to enhance your professional toolkit, German offers a powerful advantage and opens doors across education, business, politics, STEM fields, non‑governmental organizations, fashion, cuisine, and tourism.
