This fall, teachers and students have free access to an on-line course called "Finding German Town." This course is being offered by the "Collaboratory Project," a website hosted by Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Courses are somewhat informal, typically they are projects that last a few school weeks at a time. For the German-American Day project paricipants are asked to do local and on-line research and turn in a final project.
To participate, go to Collaboratory Project and fill out the form identifying yourself as associated with some educational organization, then take the “tour” that guides you through the basics. Any part of the project can be printed for further study.
“Account applications” will be approved in a day or two for full access to Collaboratory courses and resources. At this point, choose “Finding German Town,” which is designed to help students in grades 6-9 and their teachers to complete an immigration project related to German Day on October 6. Teachers can select from the “Resources” what seems to fit their lesson plans.
The best way for a teacher to get to know the course and gain the skill to guide students through it is to sign in as a “student” and try all of its parts. Of course anyone who has taken an online course will find familiar features. With knowledge of the inner workings of the site, participants can expect full success. The nice thing is that a calendar prompts “students” to bring up their concerns in a chat room at pre-arranged times, and real people at the Collaboratory will respond to any questions and help participants along.
